When two things happen contemporaneously, they happen in the same period of time. It is simply the adverb of contemporaneous, and it lives in the same formal world: history, law, academic writing. In ordinary speech people say at the same time, or while this was happening. Though actually, like contemporaneous, it does not mean in a modern way. Contemporaneously never means in today's style; it only places two things on the same stretch of the timeline. A report might say the two discoveries were made contemporaneously in different countries.

組成From contemporaneous + -ly, from Latin contemporāneus, from co- (together) + tempus (time). The -ly makes the adverb: in that same-period way.
