Consolatory describes something meant to make a sad or disappointed person feel a little better — a consolatory letter, a consolatory smile, a consolatory remark. It names the intention: this thing is there to comfort, whether or not it actually works. It is a adjective; most people would just say comforting or kind. You will meet it in news and novels more than in speech. There is an old noun use too (“a consolatory”), but can ignore that; today the adjective is the live word.

組成From Latin cōnsōlātōrius, through Middle English consolatory: “having the quality of comforting.” Same family as consolation and the comfort-verb console.
