A conniving person secretly tries to get something, or to hurt someone, by sly plans. The word is not a compliment. It shows : this person is not only clever, they are sneaky, and they do not play fair. You might hear a conniving colleague, a conniving smile, a conniving little scheme.
It comes from the verb connive. That verb can mean to secretly allow something wrong (as if you look away), and also to secretly plot. The adjective conniving leans toward the plotting, self-serving sense. It is fairly strong, a little literary or story-like, and always negative. Do not use it for someone who is simply smart at planning.
組成Connive + -ing, here used as an adjective. The verb connive comes from Latin for something like “to wink” — as if you close your eyes to a wrong thing.
