Conflicting things cannot sit together as both true, or both right, at the same time. Two stories, two numbers, two pieces of advice, two beliefs — if they are conflicting, they pull against each other, and one of them has to give, or you are left in a mess. 'Conflicting reports' means the reports do not match. It is a calm school-and-news word. You put it on ideas, results, and instructions, not usually on a person's mood. Though actually, people do say 'conflicting emotions,' which sits close to ; the tidy line is still this: conflicting is about two things that clash, is about how the clash feels inside you.
