A conflation is the result — or the act — of combining two or more things into one, especially ideas or texts. In argument, it is often a fault: that headline is a conflation of two separate reports; his claim rests on a conflation of legal and fair. You are naming the mix, and usually hinting that the mix hides a difference. In a more neutral, scholarly sense, a conflation can be a text made by joining earlier versions. The word is formal. In easy talk people say mix-up, or they use the verb: you are mixing those two things together. Though actually, students who learn conflate sometimes forget that conflation is the noun sitting next to it, not a second verb.
