To conflate two or more things is to combine them into one new thing — often two ideas, two stories, or two groups of people. In careful talk, it frequently carries a small complaint: you have mixed them as if they were the same, and they are not. Don't conflate being quiet with being . Don't conflate this war with that one. There is also a more neutral use, especially with texts: a writer conflates two older versions into a single story. Though actually, in everyday speech people sometimes use conflate when they only mean confuse or mix up. The neater difference is this: you confuse two things when you cannot tell them apart; you conflate them when you treat them as one. It is a somewhat formal, essay-and-news verb, not playground English.
組成From Latin conflatus, from conflo, to fuse or blow together: con- (together) + the Latin for to blow. English -ate makes the verb. The old picture is two fires or two metals becoming one.
