Confiscation is the official act of taking private property away, usually as a punishment or by law. It names the event or the policy, not the moment of grabbing: the confiscation of land, the confiscation of a passport, the confiscation of illegal goods. The same idea as , but as a thing you can talk about in news, court, and history. It sounds formal. In school talk people more often just use the verb: they took my phone. Though actually, confiscation can also name the result — the property now in official hands — but the usual meaning is the taking itself.
