Confidentiality is the situation — and often the duty — of not telling secret or private information to anyone else. When a doctor, a lawyer, or a promises confidentiality, they are saying: you may tell me this, and I must not spread it, unless the law forces me. You will see the word on office forms and in confidentiality agreements; it is formal. At home people say keep it secret or don't tell. Though actually, confidentiality is not the same as privacy. Privacy is 'this is mine to keep'. Confidentiality is 'you are allowed to know, but you are not allowed to pass it on'.
