Confectionery is sweets as a group: chocolates, toffees, boiled sweets, candy bars. It is a slightly formal or shop word — the supermarket aisle, the gift tin, the trade. British English uses it a lot; American English more often just says candy. It is usually uncountable: a box of confectionery. The same word can also mean the shop or the business of making sweets, like a bakery for bread. Do not confuse it with confectioner (the person) or with a confection, which can mean one fancy dessert — or, in a dry way, a story someone has made up.
