A confectioner is someone who makes or sells sweets, chocolates, fruit, and fancy cakes — the sugar things, not the daily . A baker may make bread and cakes; a confectioner is the specialist in sweets. The word feels a little old and a little British. You still see it on shop fronts, and in the phrase confectioner’s sugar, which in American recipes means the very fine white powder used for (in Britain, sugar; in Taiwan, 糖粉). Today many people would say chocolate maker, pastry chef, or candy shop instead. The related word confectionery, with a y, is the sweets themselves, or the shop.
