1. 1

Concordant means that things are in agreement, or that they follow the same regular pattern. If two teachers’ reports are concordant, they say the same kind of thing; they do not pull against each other. If measurements are concordant, they line up: the pattern holds. Scientists like the word: new results can be concordant with an earlier study, meaning they fit it. Music used to call sounds that sit well together concordant, though more often meet discordant for sounds that clash. Specialist fields keep the same idea — matching the line, matching the rule — but you do not need those uses to hold the core. It is a formal adjective. Friends do not call matching T-shirts concordant; they say they match. Though actually, concordant is not the same as identical. Things can agree, or share a pattern, without being copies of each other. The natural opposite is discordant: not in agreement, not in pattern.
