A concerto is a piece of classical music for a solo instrument — piano, violin, , and so on — playing with an orchestra. The point is the “talking” between the one and the many: the and the group take turns and also join. You name it by the solo instrument: a piano concerto, a violin concerto. A concerto grosso is an older kind, with a small group of rather than one. The usual English plural is concertos; concerti is the Italian plural, which some musicians still like. It is not a concert. A concert is the evening’s show; a concerto is one kind of piece you might hear there. The word was borrowed from Italian concerto, from the verb concertare. It is a of concert: same older source, two different English words now.
