The concertmaster is the lead violin player in an orchestra — the person at the front of the first violins. They play the violin solos written into orchestral music, give the sign to tune before the conductor walks on, and are a kind of leader for the string players. They are not the conductor (the person with the stick), and they are not merely “the best student in the section.” The job is a real rank. Though actually, the name is more American. In Britain people often say the leader (of the orchestra) for the same chair. The English word copies German Konzertmeister piece by piece: concert + master. Master here means “chief player,” not “teacher.” A woman in the post may be called concertmaster or, less often, concertmistress; many orchestras now keep concertmaster for anyone in the chair.
