A compressor is a machine, or a piece inside a machine, that squeezes air or another gas into a smaller space. After that, the air is strong enough to push things. The loud, hot part of a fridge or an air-conditioner is a compressor: it keeps the cooling gas moving. On a building site, a bigger compressor fills tanks of air for drills and paint guns. It is an ordinary technical word — mechanics and shop labels use it, not poems. Though actually, some people also call a computer program a compressor when it makes files smaller. That is a later, looser use. This entry is the real machine that squeezes air or gas.
