    A compassionate person feels for people who are suffering and usually shows it — in the voice, in the waiting, in what they do next. You can have a compassionate nurse, a compassionate teacher, a compassionate decision. It is almost always a compliment. In British workplaces, compassionate leave is a set phrase: time off because someone in the family is very ill or has died. Though actually, politicians sometimes put compassionate in front of a hard plan to make it sound kinder than it is; hear the word, then look at what the person actually does. There is a rare verb “to compassionate,” but the word you will meet is this adjective.
