Compassion is a strong, warm feeling for someone who is suffering, plus the wish to ease that suffering. Sympathy can stay in the chest; compassion wants to move — to sit with the person, to help, to make the hurt a little lighter. It is a kind, slightly formal word: hospitals, religion, speeches, and kind teachers use it a lot. People also stretch it now: self-compassion means not being cruel to yourself when you fail. Though actually, some speakers use compassion and pity as if they were the same. Pity can look down from a safe place; compassion tries to stand beside the person. You will also hear it in “have compassion for…,” which is the everyday pattern.
