Companionship is the warm feeling of not being alone — of being with someone whose company you enjoy. It can be a close friend, a partner, or even a pet; the point is the togetherness, not a job title. People also use it for a quieter kind of love: not fireworks, but someone to sit with. It is a little more formal than “having company,” but you will hear it in ordinary talk about lonely people, old age, and animals. Though actually company can mean almost the same feeling, it can also mean a business; companionship never means a firm. And the person is a companion — companionship is the being-together, not the person.
