Comically means in a comical way: funny because it looks odd, or funny because it is too much. “He comically tripped over the cable” — the fall looked silly, not tragic. You will also hear it a lot before another word: comically small, comically serious, comically early. That second use is the one students meet all the time — the speaker is smiling at how extreme something is, not saying the person tried to be a clown. Though actually, it is not “as in a comedy play.” It is “funny-odd,” or “funny because it goes too far.”
