    Combative means ready and willing to fight — or, much more often in ordinary life, ready and willing to argue. A combative interview is one where the questions push hard. A combative teammate hates to lose. It is not only fists; it is often a sharp, fighting spirit in words. Depending on who is speaking, it can sound like praise (brave, not easily pushed over) or like a warning (too eager to quarrel). It is a fairly formal adjective; in casual talk people might just say she likes a fight or he is argumentative.
