Coloration is the colours, or the pattern of colours, on a plant or an animal. A tiger’s coloration is orange with black stripes; a leaf insect’s coloration helps it look like a leaf. Science teachers and nature programmes use this word a lot. In ordinary talk, people more often just say colour or . Coloration sounds a bit more like a lab word, and that is useful: it lets you talk about the whole pattern, not only “it is brown.” Though actually, people also stretch it a little — a designer might talk about the coloration of a fabric — but the school sense you need first is still animals and plants. American spelling is coloration; British English sometimes .
