Cologne is a light liquid with a flower or plant smell that people put on the skin — often on the neck or wrists — to smell nice. It is weaker than perfume: perfume is heavier and lasts longer; cologne is and sooner. The English word is a short form of the French name eau de Cologne, “water of Cologne,” from a famous bottle first made in 1709 in the German city of Cologne. That first bottle did so well that many others copied the name, and after a while cologne stopped being only one product and became a common word for this kind of light scent. Though actually, in loose American talk, cologne often just means “the nice-smelling stuff men wear,” even when the bottle is not a true old-style eau de Cologne at all. Older shop talk treated perfume as a women’s word and cologne as a men’s word, but people of any gender wear both, and younger speakers may simply say fragrance. In Britain you also hear for what a man puts on after shaving — close, but not always the same bottle.
