A colliery is a coal mine plus the buildings and yards around it — not only the hole in the ground, but the whole workplace: shafts, sheds, offices, rails. It is a British word; American English usually just says coal mine. You find it in news about mining towns, in history, and on old maps. Though actually, when a colliery “closes”, the town is often losing a whole world of jobs, not only one tunnel. The word comes from collier, the miner, with a -y ending that here means “the place of”.
