To collectivize is to join privately owned farms or businesses together so that the government owns and runs them, in a Communist political system. Historians say a state collectivized the land, or that small farms were collectivized. Same story as collectivization, only this is the verb — the doing, not the name of the policy. It is formal, and it belongs in history, news, and , not in talk about friends pooling money. British spelling often uses collectivise, with an s; American writing usually keeps the z. Though actually, people sometimes stretch the verb to any official takeover that folds private shops or land into one state-run pile, but the core picture is still farms and businesses under Communist rule.
