    A short extra paper that changes a will without writing the whole will again. If someone has already said who should get the house, and later they want to leave a watch to a niece, a lawyer can add a codicil. It must follow the same careful signing rules as the will, or a court may ignore it. This is a lawyer’s word; ordinary families meet it when someone dies and the papers come out. Latin made it as a “little codex” — a little book-note stuck onto the big legal book. It is the extra bit, not the will itself.
