Cockfighting is when two male chickens are put together to fight, with people watching and often betting on which bird will win. The word can name the activity in general, or one occasion — a match, a meeting. In many countries it is now against the law because the birds get badly hurt; you still meet the word in news, in history, and in talk about places where it continues. It is a plain word, a little old-fashioned, not slang and not polite small-talk. Though actually English does not really stretch it to people arguing: for humans we say fighting or a brawl. As a verb form, cockfighting can also mean “taking part in that sport” (they were cockfighting behind the shed). The related noun cockfight often names one match.
