    Cock-a-leekie is a Scottish soup. The two things in the name are the two things in the bowl: chicken (cock is an old word for a male chicken) and leeks, those long, mild, onion-like stems. Other vegetables go in as well, and traditionally people sometimes add prunes — dried plums — which surprises visitors who expected only savoury soup. It is home food, not restaurant-fancy: the kind of bowl you meet on a Scottish menu, in a folk tale, or in a book, more than in everyday talk in Taiwan. Though actually the “cock” does not mean the soup must be made from a ; chicken is what people use.
