Cocaine is a strong drug, usually a white powder. People take it illegally for a fast, feeling. In a few medical settings it has been used to stop pain, because it can numb a part of the body — that use is rare now and tightly controlled. It is made from the leaves of the coca plant. Street names include coke; that everyday short form is easy to mix up with . First use of the English word appears around 1874.
