A coatstand is a tall pole that stands on the floor, with hooks or near the top. You hang a coat, jacket, hat, or bag on it when you come inside. American English more often says coat rack, which can also mean a rail on a wall. People hang scarves and umbrellas on it too, even though the name only says coat.
