A coatigan is a long knitted piece of clothing — like a cardigan that is long and thick enough to wear as a light coat. Fashion shops made the name by pushing coat and cardigan together, so you will see it on labels and in fashion writing more than in school books. It usually has an open front, like a cardigan, but it hangs more like a coat. Though actually, many people just call the same thing a long cardigan; coatigan is a shop word, not an old dictionary word.
