A coachman was a man whose job was to drive a coach pulled by horses. This is an old job; you meet it in stories, films, and history, not in the street today. He sat up high at the front, held the reins, and made the horses go, stop, and turn. Do not mix this with a sports coach, and do not mix it with a bus driver: a bus driver drives a motor coach, and we just say driver. A coachman belongs to the horse-and-carriage world.
