A fireman is a man whose job is to put out and to help when there is an accident. He rides the red truck, wears heavy clothes, and goes into smoke when other people are running out. This is the old everyday word, and children still say it. Though actually many women do the same job now, so the word most teachers and news people prefer is — it covers everyone. You will still hear fireman in songs, in older books, and in talk, and nobody will be confused. A long time ago fireman could also mean the man who fed coal into a steam engine, but almost always meet the rescue meaning first.
組成fire + man. Man here is the old ending for 'a person who does this job', the same piece you hear in policeman.
