A close-knit group is one where people know each other well and stand by one another when someone needs help — a close-knit family, team, or neighbourhood. Knit here is the old picture of stitches looped firmly together, so the group is joined, not just sitting in the same room. Close means 'in a near, warm way'. The phrase is common in news and in ordinary talk, and it is usually a compliment: it praises the bond. It does not mean the people are standing physically close, and it does not officially mean they shut other people out — though a very close-knit circle can feel hard to enter, and that is how the tidy praise gets messy in real life. Tightly-knit means almost the same.
