Clicktivism is trying to help a cause, or protest against something, by doing small things online: signing an internet petition, sharing a post, clicking like, putting a frame on your photo. The word mixes click and activism. It is often a little unkind. People who say clicktivism usually mean: this is too easy, and it may not change anything in the street. Though actually, online petitions have sometimes gathered real pressure, and sharing news can matter; the sting in the word is about mistaking a click for the whole of the work. It sits beside slacktivism — “lazy activism” — a broader cousin. You will see clicktivism in newspapers and arguments about politics, not in a children’s reader.
