In a forest, a clearing is a small open place where the trees are gone, so light can come in. People, animals, or an old fire may have made it; sometimes the trees were cut on purpose. Walkers like clearings because you can stop, see the sky, and not feel closed in. This is a quiet picture-word; you meet it in stories and nature writing more than in city talk. Though actually, English uses clearing in other jobs too — a bank clearing a payment, or someone clearing a table. Those are the same shape of word, but not this meaning. Here it is only the open patch among the trees.
