In British English, a clanger is a silly mistake that is hard to hide — the kind that makes a room go quiet, or that you wish you could take back at once. People often say someone dropped a clanger: they used the wrong name, asked a rude question, or got a fact loudly wrong in front of everyone. It is informal, and you hear it more from British speakers (especially older ones) than from Americans, who would more likely say blunder or howler. The picture behind it is a loud : the mistake does not sit quietly; it rings out. Though actually, there is also a Bedfordshire clanger, which is a pastry. That is a different word that happens to look the same. This entry is the mistake.
