Cinematography is the craft of photographing a film — camera, light, colour, movement — and, in a wider school sense, the study of that craft. When a review praises “the cinematography,” it means how the picture looks, not the plot and not the acting. A film can have quiet cinematography, almost invisible, or rich cinematography that you notice at once: long takes, deep shadow, a camera that never sits still. The word lives in reviews, film school, and credits. Everyday talk more often says the look of the film or the camera work. It is uncountable in this sense: you study cinematography; you notice the cinematography. Lists sometimes gloss it as “the skill or study of making films,” which is tidy and a bit too big. Directing, editing, and producing are other skills. Though actually, older credits often say Photography for this same job, which confuses learners, because that word also means still pictures.
