A cinematographer is the person in charge of how a film is photographed: cameras, lighting, colour, what is sharp and what melts away. On a set the same job is often called the director of photography, or DP. The director shapes what the scene is doing; the cinematographer shapes how we will see it. It is a senior craft credit, not a casual word for anyone holding a camera. A camera operator may run a particular camera; the cinematographer leads the look and the crew around it. The word is standard in reviews, festivals, and end titles. In chat, people may just say the DP. Though actually, this is not “the skill or study of making films” — that belongs with cinematography, and even there it is too wide. Filmmaking includes directing, editing, sound, acting. A cinematographer is one person, with one deep job: the moving picture’s light and eye.
