A cinemagoer is someone who goes to the cinema to see a film. That is all it claims: the person who turns up, buys a ticket, and sits in the dark. It does not mean a critic, a student of film, or a person who lives on old posters. British English likes this word; American English more often says moviegoer. Papers and cinema managers use it about a crowd more than about one proud identity: what cinemagoers want, younger cinemagoers, Saturday-night cinemagoers. You can be a rare cinemagoer or a regular one. The tone is plain, not fancy. People seldom introduce themselves as a cinemagoer; it is a word used about an audience. Though actually, it still points to the building. A person who only watches at home is not, strictly, a cinemagoer — they are a viewer, a streamer, a film fan, but they have not gone.
