Chunnel is a nickname, used especially in newspapers, for the Channel Tunnel: the long railway tunnel under the sea between England and France. Writers stuck Channel (the English Channel) and tunnel together; the blend was already in use by 1960, years before trains actually ran (the tunnel opened in 1994). It sounds and a bit . The official name is still Channel Tunnel; careful writing and maps use that, or sometimes Eurotunnel, the company name. Say it with a capital C when you mean this one tunnel, not tunnels in general.
