1. 1

In Britain, a chugger is someone paid to stand in a busy street — often in a bright jacket, with a clipboard — and stop passers-by so they will sign up to give money to a charity every month. The job is work, not volunteering. The word is a blend of charity and , and that joke is the point: they collect for a good cause, but they step into your path the way a street might, and many people feel trapped into a polite chat they did not want. Ordinary speakers and newspapers use it, usually with a sigh or a half-smile, not as a proud job title. You will hear it in the UK, Ireland, and sometimes Australia; Americans almost never say it. A different word spelled the same way can mean a person who drinks a whole glass in one go (from chug); that is not this word.
