If someone is chubby, they are a little fat, in a way that often looks healthy, soft, and even cute — a baby’s cheeks, a round little child, a well-fed cat. It is milder than fat, and much milder than words people use to insult. Families use it with love. Friends may use it as a joke. Adults can still feel hurt by it, because it points at the body. The word has been in English since the 1600s, and it comes from the , a thick-bodied fish: people looked at the fish and then at a round person. There is also a slang noun “a chubby” that some speakers use in a rude sexual way; that is not this sense, and you can leave it alone. For , chubby is the friendly adjective, mostly for small children, animals, cheeks, and fingers.
