    Chrome is the hard, bright, silver-looking metal you see on old car bumpers, , and some taps. In careful talk, that shine is often a thin coat of the metal on top of another metal, put there so the thing will not rust and will stay bright. In everyday talk, people just say chrome for that shiny surface: chrome wheels, a chrome bumper. You can also chrome something — cover it with this coat. It is a workshop and car word as much as a science word. It is a finish, not a precious metal like gold. The same spelling is also a famous web browser; that is a different meaning, not the metal.
