A choker is a piece of jewellery that sits very tightly around a woman’s neck, more like a collar than a long necklace that hangs down. It may be a ribbon, a band of velvet, a string of beads, or a thin chain worn high against the throat. The name comes from choke: it fits so close that it looks as if it might choke you, though a real choker should only feel snug. It is a fashion word, especially popular in the 1990s and then again later. You hear it in shops and magazines. Though actually, choker can mean other things in English too — someone who chokes another person, or, in sport, a player who fails at the last moment — but the jewellery sense is the one you meet in clothes and gifts.
