Something chilling makes you feel , especially because it is cruel, violent, or dangerous — not fun-scary, but cold and serious. A chilling crime, a chilling warning, a chilling silence after bad news. You meet it in news, history, and talk about films. It is stronger than merely scary. Though actually, the same form can just mean “making you cold” (a chilling wind), and it is also the -ing form of the verb chill; here the meaning is the one in view.
