Chickweed is a small garden plant that many people treat as a weed. It grows low and fast, with tiny white flowers that look a bit like stars. It spreads through vegetable beds, so often pull it up. The name is old: it was “chicken-weed,” because chickens like to eat it. Some writers say the name was once used for many plants that were good chicken food — Old English even had a phrase meaning “chicken food” for plants of that kind. Though actually, people do sometimes eat young chickweed in a salad; most home still just want it gone.
