It is also used as an adjective with the same meaning: not brave. English already uses chicken to mean “coward,” and shit here just makes the insult dirtier and meaner. You will hear it in angry talk, in films, and in older American army speech. It is not a classroom word, and it can really hurt. Though actually, people also stretch it a little: chickenshit can mean something small and not worth the fuss, like petty rules — but the main insult is still “you have no courage.”
