A Chicano is a US citizen who was born in Mexico, or whose family came from Mexico. It is also an adjective: Chicano literature, Chicano art. The word comes from Mexican Spanish chicano, from an older spoken form of mexicano — Mexican. In the 1960s and 1970s many Mexican-Americans took Chicano as a proud political and cultural name; US history still talks about the Chicano Movement. Women may say Chicana. Though actually, not every Mexican-American likes or uses the word. Some prefer Mexican-American, Mexican, or another name. It is not a casual sticker to put on a stranger, and it is not a word for every Latino person in the United States. Use it for people and writing that use it for themselves. In English it is usually capitalised. In Taiwan this is US culture and history talk, not a daily Taipei word.
