Chevrolet is an American car brand, made by General Motors (GM). In everyday English people nearly always shorten it to Chevy. For many years it was the ordinary family car in the United States — not the most expensive, not a rare sports car, just the car a lot of families actually drove. You will still see the name on cars and trucks, and in songs and films about American life.

The company was named after Louis Chevrolet, a racing driver who helped start it. The name is French in origin, which is why the spelling looks a little surprising if you only know English. In Taiwan the brand is known by its Chinese name; when people speak English they often just say Chevy.
