Cheesecloth is a very thin cotton cloth with tiny holes in it. People first used it to wrap some kinds of cheese while the cheese dried and the extra liquid dripped away, so the name is simply cheese + cloth. It is not made of cheese, though that is a fair guess from the look of the word. Cooks still use it a lot: to strain soup or juice, to hold herbs in a pot, or to drain yogurt. Because it is light and a little see-through, people sometimes make loose summer clothes or decorations from it too. You will meet it more in the kitchen than in a clothes shop. It feels like a practical, old-fashioned word — not fancy, not scientific.
起司布(包起司、過濾用的薄棉布;廚房裡也常叫紗布。台灣說起司,中國大陸較常說奶酪、芝士)
