A checkpoint is a place where an official person stops you and looks — at your papers, your bags, or your car — before you may go on. You meet them at borders, at the edge of a city in tense times, or on a road where the police are checking licences. The word feels serious; news reports use it a lot. Though actually, computer games later borrowed it for a safe spot that saves your progress, which is a much kinder stretch of the same idea: a place where you are checked. In talk about travel and the news, it is still the real place on the road.
